Caring For Someone Can Create Stress For You, Too
Every year, more than 14 million family members provide care to 7.7 million older adults who live at home. They are typically spouses, children, siblings or other family members who are providing up to 28 hours a week of regular care without being paid. Many provide care that goes beyond everyday tasks and include medical care such as cleaning wounds, changing bandages, giving injections and managing medications.
A recent study by Johns Hopkins shows that all of this caregiving can mean problems for the caregivers, including financial problems and physical and mental health issues. The study estimates nearly half of caregivers are helping someone with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease and another third are helping someone with a serious disability.
The Cost is More Than Financial
The cost to caregivers can be enormous. Some 28% of caregivers missed work at least once in the previous month and also reported missing out on time with family and friends. Caregivers are nearly 80% more likely to experience emotional problems and more than twice as likely to have physical problems and/or financial concerns.
Caregivers clearly could use a break, and Respite Care is one way to provide that relief. Around The Clock Care helps caregivers who need time off to go shopping, take a vacation, attend events, etc. We provide respite care for adults and children, including sick day care in the home.
